You guys need to stop dismissing low income parent’s testimonies that their family suffers in other areas of financial assistance when infrequent child support payments are made. Giving the parent who is obligated to pay it 2 months to report changes or start paying again is too long. Meanwhile, the other parent who has that child also often has rent and SNAP assistance that’s based on those payments being made on time. I’m one of them. When my child’s father pays 90%, I pay 100%. When he doesnt pay for 3 weeks without prior warning, I still pay 100%. I pay rent that is based on the child support he sends and it’s adjusted monthly. They can’t adjust my rent until the child support office sends a letter saying he’s delinquent. Food stamps are also predetermined on a monthly basis. So I pay 100% when he misses payments. My child pays 100% when he misses payments. This guy is not a person who will ever pay that money back. He didnt pay support or see his child for nearly 5 years. He started paying last year’s by force when I finally found him. He still dont want anything to do with his child and it would be inappropriate after all this time anyways. These situations need to be taken into account with this child support program. The ones where parents drop off the map. Abandon their kids. If this program is truly for the betterment of children and not solely a way to decrease government assistance paid out then something needs to be done about people who dont pay for years & refuse to co-parent & abandon their kids like they’re nothing. I think theres alot of propaganda going around about making sure the person paying gets to see their kids. Theres alot of talk about parents who isolate their kids from the other parent. Mainly a bunch of men talking down about women who things didn’t work out with but they have kids together. The ones who do come around their kids wanna show up with new partners around their kids & ex’s after not seeing the kids themselves for months at a time, as if that’s not tacky. That’s child abuse, if you ask me. I also consider bringing around the new flavor of the month to verbally/physically combat or intimidate the child’s primary mom or dad who they live with as a form of domestic abuse. There’s not near enough talk about these things. There’s also not near enough about these heartless parents who go around making kids who they ultimately abandon the other parent with and neglect every responsibility they have to that child. The person who did this to me got away with it scott free. Child support office is so proud of him for finally paying after 5 years of not paying that they dont even care about my testimony that I pay 100% when he suddenly misses 3 weeks of payments. Apparently they feel as though its appropriate to be compassionate towards him & give him 2 ADDITIONAL months to get behind on some more child support instead of being compassionate towards the child who’s food stamps & housing were calculated that month based on child support. The food stamp office thinks the child should have to eat boxed food bank food when this happens. My child pays 100%. I pay 100%. The absent dad just gets another month or more behind. The child support office copped an attitude with me when I called back for the 2nd time and asked if he had reported job loss or anything yet.. After 3 full weeks of no payments received. They said in a real hateful tone of voice: “He HAS been paying. Last payment was received at the end of June.” Um ok.. Do you realize I have received those payments once a week for almost about 10 months now and it’s currently July 12th?? My monthly rent is based on receiving those payments. My food stamps are based on receiving those payments. Smh. That $60/wk pays for my child’s food. It’s buys milk cheese break peanut butter apples bananas oranges. This is so wrong to talk to me as though not paying since June 24th is a big deal. It’s a huge deal if it affects my rent and food stamp case. I’m a low income parent. I do not have time or enough money reserves to wait for 2 months to “make sure” a man who I don’t even know anymore who didn’t pay or see my child for 5 years is being delinquent again. How is it really righteous to give him so long to report job losses-knowing good & well what’s happening to the low income children as a result?? This is ALL about saving the state money until that gets addressed. Stop using these kids as political ploy unless you really care about what happens to them. Look past the prejudice and see that low income people are human beings too.
