My daughter had been living with my mother in Pleasant Hill Iowa until she passed aways last month. Her father and I were paying her child support once a month, our checks were being garnished, and put into my mother’s account. The power attorney of my mother’s bank account closed her account. Next week however, my daughter will be moving to Texas to live with me. I spoke with my case manager and she claims that in order to have the child support terminated, I would have to get a lawyer. I do not understand why I would have spend a bunch of money on a lawyer to get it terminated when I they did not have to go through lawyer to put me on it.
Another thing I want to add is since my mother’s bank account is closed, where will those payments go until I am able to get my child support terminated. My case manager was of no help, and acted as if she did not know what to do in my situation. I have never heard of having to get a lawyer to terminate my support. I was told from someone else that all i needed was proof that my daughter was living with me and a copy of my mother’s death certificate to send to them so that they the child support Unit could terminate it. Would anyone happen to know answers to these questions?
